Emergency Services Southwest

This Saturday, January 20  is our volunteer day at  Emergency Services Southwest located at  St. Luke's United Methodist Church, Gethsemane Campus (6856 Bellaire Boulevard  Houston, TX 77074) from 9am-12pm. Please arrive by 8:45am . We open the doors promptly at 9am and use this 15 minutes to update volunteers, assign positions for the day, and to have our opening prayers.

If you are interested in helping, please contact Czarena Siebert at czarena.siebert@hp.com.  She can give you the necessary training materials for the varous volunteer positions, or you may show up and shadow an ROBC volunteer.  All are welcome, so bring a friend!  This is also a fun and rewarding way for young people to earn community service hours.

Our Volunteer Saturdays for the next few month are January 20, February 17, March 17, April 21, May 19, and June 23.  So please mark your calendars.

Guest Speaker Brad Griffin

Brad Griffin Presents  Sticky Faith: Practical Ideas to Build Long-Term Faith in Our Kids

on Thursday, February 1, 6:00—7:30 p.m.

Despite the best attempts by churches and families to raise kids in the Christian faith, statistics show that nearly half of high school graduates pick up their diplomas and ditch their faith.  Why is that?  What makes the difference?

All ROBS/ROBC parents are invited to get a deeper look into the past decade of research on kids and faith on February 1 in the Sanctuary from 6:00-7:30 p.m.  Presenter Brad Griffin will give you practical ways to keep teenagers engaged in family and church so they build faith that sticks.  The event is sponsored by ROBS.  Please contact Melanie Gregg (mgregg@robs.org ) with any questions.

Deacon Pancake Breakfast

Sunday January 28th the ROBC Deacons will be hosting their annual Pancake Breakfast.  There will be plenty of delicious carbs and sweet syrup to go around late enough in the month for you to feel less guilty about breaking that New Year's resolution.  We hope you can join us before worship in the Commons for a great time of food and fellowship.  Bring the whole family.

  A Word About Sunday's Worship

Sermon Series Continues on  Stories of the Kingdom:

Being Ready If the Lord Waits

Matthew 25:1-13

I am curious: has anyone who worships at ROBC heard of “the Rapture?"  Has anyone not heard of it?  Well, as Paul says in Sunday’s sermon text, “I would not want you to be ignorant (uninformed), brothers and sisters.”

How can we be ready to meet the Lord?  Let’s say you decided to run in the marathon last Sunday, what do you do?  You don’t just sign up for the Houston Marathon, put on your track suit, and go to the starting line.  If you do that 26.2 miles is a long, long way to run.  Training for a marathon takes months, sometimes years.

Almost all of us can get in better shape than we are.  We can “eat less and move more.”  We can diet and exercise.  If that’s how one tends to the body, how do you tend to your soul?  Paul admonishes us to stay alert and be prepared.  This means to live on tip toe and be in shape everyday for the Lord could come at any moment.

See you Sunday to see how we might get in shape spiritually to meet the Lord.
