Children

Our Children's Ministry is based on the belief that if we plant the seeds early, our children will grow and develop in faith. The aim of our children's ministry is expressed in Luke 8:15: " . . . but the seeds that fell on the good soil are honest, good-hearted people. They listen to God's words and cling to them."

Throughout the year our Children's Minister, Amy Smith, offers many creative Children's Programs as a part of our ministry. Please give us the opportunity to share our love and faith with your family!

For information about any of our childrens' programs, please contact Amy Smith at asmith@robc.org or 713-622-0570 ext. 119.

Wednesday Night Children's Program

Our Children's Minister, Amy Smith, leads this program every Wednesday night, from 6-7pm in the church library.  The Way of the Child recognizes that children have an innate spirituality with a natural acceptance of mystery, an amazing capacity for awe, a vital imagination, a longing to be their unique selves, and an ability to be open to and receive God's love.  Instead of a classroom setting, the children work with their hands to illustrate, create art, or make service projects while Amy leads them in discussion of the evening's topic.

by Wynn McGregor
Published by Upper Room Books, June 2006

The Way of the Child, for children ages 6-11 years,

  • Takes seriously and joyfully children's capacities, deep needs, and spirits
  • Leads children into a deeper relationship with God
  • Instills in children spiritual practices to form lifelong habits
  • Encourages children to respond to God in awe
  • Helps children embrace all of life, responding to God's call
  • Provides an experience of vital community

The Way of the Child came to life when a Companions small group member, Wynn McGregor, had a vision to engage children in spiritual practice. Wynn was a part of a Companions group, and the spiritual practices and community life she experienced there fostered in her a desire to offer a formational experience for children. The Way of the Child, designed for ages 6-11, calls children to recognize their own relationship with God and to create quiet space in which to listen. With 39 modules that can be used as a whole or in sections, The Way of the Child guides both small and large churches in helping children create habits of spiritual practice.

The Author
Wynn McGregor, author of The Way of the Child, is a certified Christian Educator in the Presbyterian Church (USA). Educated at Winthrop University (B.A.) and the Presbyterian School of Christian Education (M.A.), Wynn's vocational history includes vast experience with both children and leaders of children.

Annual Children's Events

Valentines day 2010 012.jpg

Valentine's Day Lunch and Party

On a Sunday in mid-February, the children bring Valentines to share during our party in the Common's Dining room.  After Sunday worship, our families with young children gather for lunch, and then the children swap Valentine's and treats with their friends.  Parents get to enjoy this time of fellowship too!

Easter Brunch and Egg Hunt019.JPG

The Saturday before Easter Sunday is when families come for brunch and fellowship time.  During our beautiful weather in April, we eat in the courtyard outside the Commons Dining room.  Afterwards, Miss Amy gathers the children to tell the story of Easter, using books and visuals to help teach the message.  Then we hunt for eggs in front of the sanctuary.

The second week in June is when we gather for our annual VBS.  Each year has a different theme to teach children the importance of God's love and the Bible's stories.  Miss Amy goes ALL OUT with decorating the chapel!  We always welcome non-church members in addition to our own ROBC children.

Christmas PartyIMG_0961.JPG

One Saturday morning in December Miss Amy organizes a fun, and Christ centered party for the kids.  She brings a craft for them to make that coincides with her Christmas message, and then follows with a pizza lunch and yummy Christmas treats!
