Finding Your Purpose
Jeremiah 29:10-13a; Luke 12:22-31

This sermon will focus on finding your purpose and calling in life.  Does life have a purpose?  How do we choose our occupation, our spouse, and make the big decisions that come our way?  Is life just random?  What standard should we use? Jeremiah reflects on something of the purpose in life that God grants to each of us: to use our gifts in glorifying Him.

The Basket Case
Exodus 1:22-2:10

We will focus on the powerful sacrifice of love that Moses’ mother lived out in giving up her baby and to give him to God.  This, in some sense, is what we are all called to do as parents at home and as adults in the congregation – to give our children to the Lord.

With No Other Way Out
Romans 7:15-25a

The Apostle Paul writes a tongue twister that is nevertheless true about us all: “I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.” And he calls out for spiritual rescue. The heart of the gospel is that, despite our failings and even our best efforts, Christ saves us from our predicament. He indeed is our Savior.

The Ministry of Reconciliation
Ephesians 4:1-6, 25-32; Matthew 18:15-20; 2 Corinthians 5:16-21

Controlling our emotions, listening to one another, seeking each other out are all parts of how Christians are to experience life with one another in the church. But more than anything else, our unity is based on a reconciliation Christ accomplished for us with God the Father, a reconciliation we in turn offer to one another.

One Body, Many Parts
I Corinthians 12:12-31

Though every congregation is a fragile group, one spiritual gift bonds all together:  our shared faith in Christ Jesus as Lord.  In addition, there are varieties of gifts, services, and work in the church, but it is the same Spirit, Lord, and God operating in us all, and we are all charged to serve the common good.

The Mystery of the Tomb
John 20:1-9

The theme of this Easter sermon is how essential the resurrection of Christ is to our faith, that the tomb was empty and that Christ rose that we might have hope for both today and the future. “He is risen indeed!”

Who Is Barabbas, Anyway?
Matthew 27:15-26

Barabbas was called a “notorious prisoner” and was placed in the balance against Jesus: one a dreadful sinner, the other an innocent man.  The Jews called for Barabbas to be released and Jesus to be crucified.  Who is Barabbas?: We are!

Having a Humble Heart
Psalm 131

This simple psalm of David expresses something quite difficult to pray sincerely – that we not have proud hearts, haughty eyes; that we not concern ourselves with matters too large for ourselves.  Instead, we should have stilled and quieted souls. May God help us to quiet ourselves, to humble ourselves, and satisfy ourselves before God.

Escaping Dragons
Psalm 124

God is our help. “If the Lord had not been on our side,” then we would be mired in our own troubles. But, as the Psalmist says, “We have escaped like a bird out of the fowler’s snare; the snare has been broken, and we have escaped. Our help is in the name of the Lord!”

Watching Over You
Psalm 121

Focus here will be on the sovereignty of God: that God is constantly watching over us, granting us strength, protecting us. And he never slumbers nor sleeps.  Does our help come from these mountains?  No.  Our help comes from him who created them: the Lord our God.

New Series:  “The Lord’s Prayer:  How to Pray Like Jesus”

Kingdom, Power, and Glory Forever
(Seventh in Series on the Lord's Prayer)
Matthew 6:9-13 (special emphasis on Matthew 6:13)

While the doxology of the Lord’s Prayer is not in many translations (and we shall discuss why it is not), it has been Christian tradition for centuries to pray that all the credit and glory goes to God.  Why should we not pray that all the purpose for living is for God? And we say, “Amen”: “So be it!”

New Series:  “The Lord’s Prayer:  How to Pray Like Jesus”

Forgive Us Our Trespasses
(Sixth in Series on the Lord's Prayer)
Matthew 6:9-13 (special emphasis on Matthew 6:12)

Sometimes we are reluctant to ask God to forgive us, thinking we need to wallow in our sins as punishment.  Still, God promises to forgive the genuinely repentant, not because we deserve it, but because Christ has died for our sins and on behalf of us.  It is well with our souls because our sin is nailed to the cross.

New Series:  “The Lord’s Prayer:  How to Pray Like Jesus”

Our Daily Bread
(Fifth in Series on the Lord's Prayer)
Matthew 6:9-13 (special emphasis on Matthew 6:11)

Our final word of petition is that God would provide for our daily needs.  Here there is a connection here to the wandering Israelites and their manna.  God provides, even the Bread of Life.

New Series:  “The Lord’s Prayer:  How to Pray Like Jesus”

Thy Will Be Done
(Fourth in Series on the Lord's Prayer)
Matthew 6:9-13 (special emphasis on Matthew 6:10)

We ask not that our own will be done, but God’s. Even Jesus, especially Jesus, denied himself and did his Father’s will (“Let this cup pass from me, but not my will . . . ).  We often suffer in order to do God’s will, but suffering is part and parcel to this life: Have Thine Own Way, Lord!
